The choice of filler metal is critical for controlling carbon levels,Filler metals are selected for stainless steel pipes to improve welding performance and meet application requirements.

The “L” mark Filler metals provide a lower maximum carbon content. That helps maintain the corrosion resistance of low carbon stainless steel alloys.

If you weld 304L base metal with standard 308 filler metal.This will actually increase the carbon content of the joint and increase the chance of corrosion.

In food, beverage, pharmaceutical and other high-purity applications, low carbon content is essential to maintain corrosion resistance.

The “H” mark Filler metals provide higher carbon content. It will be better for applications which is requiring higher strength.

The higher silicon content Filler metals will improve weld flow, improve overlap and increase travel speed. The grade is ER309LSi.

The 309 series filler metals are very good at joining dissimilar stainless steel and surfacing applications.
